For the first time since 2003, Utah's economy is coping with year-over-year job losses, dashing hopes that Utah would remain largely insulated from the nation's economic crisis. The job losses are still fairly small, compared with other states, but the year-over-year declines represent a stark turnaround for one of the West's hottest economies. Utah's economic downturn was triggered in great part by the downturn in residential real estate that began in earnest last summer, which has led to job losses among homebuilders and related enterprises, such as real estate brokerages, title companies and mortgage companies.
